Coronaca, SC — A 2.5 magnitude earthquake struck near Coronaca, South Carolina, on Sunday afternoon, raising questions about preparedness during Earthquake Awareness Week.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake occurred at 10:09 a.m., 3 kilometers north-northwest of Coronaca. It had a depth of 4.6 kilometers, making it shallow enough to be felt by residents nearby. According to the USGS, at least three people reported feeling the tremor.
This event coincides with South Carolina’s Earthquake Awareness Week, aimed at educating residents on what to do during seismic activity. The South Carolina Emergency Management Division urges everyone to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” when an earthquake strikes.
While the earthquake was relatively minor, South Carolina is among the most seismically active areas in the Southeast. Emergency officials are reminding residents to stay alert and prepared as aftershocks could follow.
