DuPage County, IL – A Lombard man accused of violently attacking multiple DuPage County Sheriff’s deputies at the county courthouse this week has been ordered held without bail. Judge Joshua Dieden granted prosecutors’ motion Friday to deny pre-trial release.
According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, 27-year-old Avinash Panjwani allegedly assaulted deputies inside the DuPage County Courthouse on September 12, 2025. Authorities say the incident began after a court hearing, when Panjwani reportedly made aggressive gestures toward a deputy before leaving the courtroom.
Roughly 20 minutes later, Panjwani allegedly returned and struck a deputy near the courthouse escalator, knocking the officer backward. Officials say Panjwani then got on top of the deputy, placing his hands on the officer’s head and attempting to gouge his eyes. Additional deputies rushed in, and Panjwani allegedly bit, kneed, and spit at officers during the struggle.
Three deputies were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. Panjwani was arrested at the scene and now faces five counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, one count of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, and two counts of resisting a police officer causing injury.
“The alleged battery of our deputies is not just a direct attack on the men and women who protect us, but an assault on the rule of law,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement, adding that his office has zero tolerance for such violence. Sheriff James Mendrick praised deputies for regaining control quickly, noting that the injured officers are recovering.
Panjwani’s next court date is scheduled for October 6, 2025, before Judge Brian Telander.
