Wheaton, IL – Drivers and pedestrians in downtown Wheaton should prepare for closures beginning Sunday evening as the popular Hale Street Tents return for the 2026 outdoor dining season.

According to the City of Wheaton Government, Hale Street will be closed between Front Street and Wesley Street starting late Sunday, April 26, to allow crews to set up the tented dining area. The outdoor dining experience officially begins May 1 and is expected to continue through early fall, bringing expanded seating and seasonal activity to the downtown corridor in DuPage County.

The event, organized by the Downtown Wheaton Association, features outdoor dining from local restaurants along with live music on select days. The tents, a familiar summer attraction in the western Chicago suburb, are designed to create a pedestrian-friendly space for residents and visitors.

City officials also reminded the public of safety rules during the event. Bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and skates are not allowed under the tents or on downtown sidewalks. Those traveling through the area with wheels must dismount and walk, except along designated paths like the Illinois Prairie Path.

While Hale Street will serve as a central hub, additional outdoor dining and entertainment options will be available throughout other parts of downtown Wheaton during the warmer months. Local leaders encourage residents to explore nearby businesses and support the community throughout the season.

The closure is expected to impact traffic flow in the immediate area, particularly during evening hours and weekends when foot traffic increases.
