Wheaton, IL – A Glendale Heights man will spend the rest of his life in prison following his conviction for the fatal 2021 shooting of a Hanover Park resident.

A DuPage County judge on Monday sentenced 59-year-old Richard Goodwin to two concurrent natural life sentences in the Illinois Department of Corrections after a jury earlier this year found him guilty of murdering 23-year-old Marek Krywko. The sentencing follows a four-day trial in January, during which jurors also found Goodwin guilty of aggravated battery with a firearm.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, officers with the Hanover Park Police Department responded to a home on Pebblebeach Drive around 7:47 p.m. on August 2, 2021, following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered one woman outside the residence with a gunshot wound to the thigh. Inside, Krywko was found critically wounded after being shot in the thigh, suffering a strike to the femoral artery. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities allege that Goodwin and two women went to Krywko’s home that evening to purchase marijuana. During the visit, after being handed a bottle of water by one of the women, Goodwin allegedly shot her and then shot Krywko before fleeing with the two women. He was arrested without incident on August 25, 2021, and held in the DuPage County Jail on $500,000 cash bond.

“This senseless murder not only took a family member from those who loved him, but shook an entire community,” said State’s Attorney Robert Berlin following the sentencing.

Goodwin has remained in custody since his arrest.
