Beatrice, NE – Authorities were called to a Beatrice residence last week after dozens of World War II-era bombs were discovered in the basement. The Nebraska State Patrol Bomb Squad and the Nebraska Air National Guard’s 155th Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit responded to safely handle the unexpected find.
According to the Beatrice Police Department, officers received a call Thursday after the homeowner had passed away. Family members, while clearing out the property, found nearly 40 pieces of ordnance tucked away in the basement. Concerned for their safety, they contacted local law enforcement, who then called in bomb squad experts to assess the munitions.
The Nebraska State Patrol Bomb Squad and EOD unit carefully inspected each item, ultimately determining that all were inert. “”Thankfully in this case, none of the items were live munitions, but it’s not safe to assume that of any potential explosive device you may find,” said Sgt. Clayton Dishong, commander of the NSP Bomb Squad. “”If you ever come across any potential explosive device when cleaning out a loved one’s home or in any other circumstance, call 911 immediately and do not move the item.”
This unexpected discovery highlights the risks of forgotten war relics, which occasionally turn up in older homes and estates. Both the Nebraska Bomb Squad and EOD unit reportedly respond to dozens of similar cases each year, especially as people sort through items after loved ones pass away.
Officials warn that even if items appear harmless, such relics should be handled only by trained professionals. The Nebraska State Patrol reminds the public to stay vigilant and report any potentially hazardous items found during cleanouts or estate settlements.
