Dodge City, Kansas – Strong winds and very dry air will create dangerous fire conditions this afternoon, with any spark capable of spreading بسرعة across southwest Kansas between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for Stanton, Grant, Morton, and Stevens counties. South winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, while relative humidity drops as low as 13 to 20 percent—conditions that support rapid wildfire growth.

Communities including Liberal, Elkhart, Johnson City, and Hugoton face the highest risk during peak afternoon hours. Fires that start could spread quickly across open grassland, especially along highways such as US-54 and US-83 where vehicle sparks or dragging chains can ignite dry fuels. Emergency crews warn that multiple fire starts could strain response resources.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should avoid any activity that could produce sparks. Secure trailer chains, delay equipment use, and remain alert for smoke in your area.

Fire danger will ease after sunset as winds weaken, but conditions remain dry into the evening. Additional warnings may be issued if winds increase further or humidity drops lower than expected.
