Dodge City, Kansas – Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect across southwest Kansas on Friday as snowfall spreads across the region, bringing the potential for hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a winter storm warning is in effect for far southwest Kansas, where snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are expected today. Farther east and north, including the Dodge City area, a winter weather advisory has been issued, with up to 4 inches of snow possible.
Forecasters said snow is expected to begin as light this morning before briefly becoming moderate to heavy at times. The heavier snow bands are expected to be short-lived, lasting only a few hours at any given location as the system moves through.
The National Weather Service noted that snow may initially melt as it falls due to relatively warm ground temperatures. In addition, some melting may occur from below as snow accumulates. These factors are expected to limit total accumulations somewhat, especially on treated or paved surfaces.
Winds are forecast to remain relatively light, generally in the 10 to 15 mph range, which should limit widespread blowing and drifting snow. However, reduced visibility may still occur during periods of heavier snowfall.
Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate at times today, particularly during heavier snow bursts. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and remain alert for rapidly changing road conditions.
Residents in warning and advisory areas should monitor local conditions closely and be prepared for snow-covered roads and reduced visibility. The National Weather Service emphasized that snowfall amounts may vary depending on the exact placement of heavier snow bands.
Additional updates will be issued as the winter system progresses across southwest Kansas.
