Detroit, Michigan – Wind gusts up to 35 mph will push across southeast Michigan through Friday evening, setting up travel concerns on I-75 and I-96 before snow arrives Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, southwest winds will increase through the afternoon with gusts between 25 and 35 mph. Temperatures will climb into the low to mid-50s across metro Detroit, Ann Arbor and Pontiac, running well above late February averages. High-profile vehicles on I-94 and along the Lodge Freeway may encounter strong crosswinds during the evening commute.
A cold front sweeps through Saturday evening, changing the mild pattern and bringing accumulating snow overnight. Forecasters expect 1 to 2 inches of snow across much of southeast Michigan by early Sunday morning. The steadiest snow is likely after 8 p.m. Saturday through the pre-dawn hours Sunday.
Roads including I-75 from Detroit to Flint, I-94 toward Port Huron and I-275 in western Wayne County could become snow-covered late Saturday night. As temperatures fall into the 20s Sunday morning, untreated pavement may turn icy, especially on bridges and overpasses.
Drivers should prepare now by checking tire tread, topping off windshield fluid and allowing extra time for travel late Saturday night into early Sunday. Secure outdoor items today ahead of gusty winds.
Colder air settles in for the second half of the weekend, and refreezing remains possible Sunday night. Additional advisories may be issued if snowfall totals trend higher.
