Detroit, Michigan — Sinkhole repairs are closing eastbound I-96 local lanes at M-39, forcing traffic shifts and ramp closures beginning Monday.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, crews will close the eastbound I-96 local lanes at M-39, also known as the Southfield Freeway, starting at 9 a.m. Monday and continuing through early March to allow crews enough space to safely complete repairs.

During the closure, drivers traveling eastbound on I-96 in the local lanes will be required to use either M-39 or the eastbound I-96 express lanes. Eastbound I-96 local lane traffic between U.S.-24 (Telegraph Road) and M-39 will only be able to access M-39 or the eastbound I-96 express lanes.

MDOT said the ramp from the eastbound I-96 express lanes to the local lanes at M-39 will also be closed. Additional restrictions already in place will remain through early spring, including the closure of the northbound M-39 ramp to the eastbound I-96 local lanes. Southbound M-39 traffic will only be able to access the ramp to the eastbound I-96 express lanes.

Access to the eastbound I-96 local lanes will remain available from Greenfield Road and locations farther east, MDOT said.

The agency has not released an estimated completion date beyond early March but said the extended timeline is necessary due to the nature of the sinkhole repairs and safety requirements for crews working in the area.

The closures are expected to affect weekday commuters, delivery drivers, and students traveling between Detroit’s west side and nearby suburbs during the morning and afternoon rush periods.

MDOT advises drivers to plan extra travel time, follow posted detours, and watch for changing traffic patterns near the M-39 interchange.
