Vassalboro, Maine — A head-on collision on Route 3 Monday afternoon killed a 48-year-old man and shut down traffic near Rich Road.

According to the Maine State Police, troopers from the Central Field Troop responded around 3:40 p.m. Monday, February 2, to a reported two-vehicle crash on Route 3 in Vassalboro. The collision involved a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and a Ford F-650 commercial motor vehicle.

Police said the pickup truck was operated by Ryan Page of China, Maine. The commercial motor vehicle was driven by Douglas Boivin, 64, of Jay.

The initial investigation indicates the pickup truck crossed the center line and struck the commercial vehicle head-on, according to state police. Investigators said Boivin attempted to steer to the right to avoid the collision but was unable to prevent the crash.

Page succumbed to his injuries at the scene and was pronounced dead by first responders. Boivin was not injured.

State police said a secondary crash occurred when a third vehicle swerved to avoid the initial collision, came to rest in the roadway, and struck a guardrail. That driver reported minor injuries.

Route 3 experienced traffic disruptions while emergency crews responded and investigators documented the scene. The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been announced.

Troopers were assisted by the Maine State Police Traffic Safety Unit, the Commercial Motor Vehicle Unit, Vassalboro Fire and Rescue, Augusta Fire and Rescue, and Delta Ambulance.

Route 3 is a heavily traveled corridor for local commuters and workers, particularly during afternoon hours, and drivers were urged to use caution while traveling through the area.
