Detroit, MI – Southeast Michigan drivers are urged to use extreme caution Wednesday as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 4 p.m., bringing 2 to 5 inches of snow and a sharp temperature drop expected to create icy road conditions this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac.
The advisory area has been expanded to include the M-59 corridor, stretching from Pontiac to Sterling Heights, where roads are already slick and untreated surfaces could quickly freeze as a cold front sweeps across the region.
While most of the morning snow has already fallen, the NWS reports that an additional dusting to 2 inches remains possible into the afternoon, followed by rapidly falling temperatures below freezing. The agency warns that untreated surfaces may freeze solid by evening, posing a significant hazard to drivers and pedestrians alike.
“Snow will taper off in intensity before ending late this afternoon with the passage of a cold front,” meteorologists said in the latest update. “The main concern is the rapid freezing of any wet or slushy surfaces as temperatures fall.”
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and check updated forecasts before heading out. Visibility could also be reduced in snow showers across metro Detroit and Flint.
