DES MOINES, Iowa – Thick fog has developed across much of central and eastern Iowa early Sunday, prompting a Dense Fog Advisory from the National Weather Service in Des Moines through 8 a.m. Visibility has dropped below a quarter mile in spots, especially along Interstates 35, 80, and 380, affecting communities including Waterloo, Marshalltown, Newton, Oskaloosa, and Ottumwa.

According to forecasters, temperatures hovering near freezing are causing patchy freezing fog, which may lead to slick bridges and overpasses, particularly in rural areas and low-lying valleys. While most roads remain above freezing, drivers are urged to use headlights, slow down, and allow extra following distance until conditions improve after sunrise.

The fog will gradually lift by midmorning as light winds mix the lower atmosphere. Sunshine and cool, calm conditions are expected later today with highs in the lower 50s. The NWS advises motorists and early travelers to remain alert for rapidly changing visibility, especially in river valleys and near open fields.

A warming trend is expected early in the week before another cold front arrives midweek.
