LA CROSSE, Wis. – Thick fog and subfreezing temperatures are creating hazardous travel conditions across southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa early Sunday morning. The National Weather Service in La Crosse has a Dense Fog Advisory in effect through 8 a.m., with visibility dropping below a quarter mile in spots from Platteville, Wisconsin, to Charles City and Elkader, Iowa.
According to forecasters, the combination of fog and temperatures in the upper 20s is producing patchy freezing fog, leading to slick bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. Motorists are urged to slow down, use headlights, and increase following distance until fog lifts midmorning.
The fog will gradually dissipate after sunrise as winds increase slightly and temperatures climb above freezing. Skies will clear later today, bringing a cool but pleasant afternoon with highs in the upper 40s to near 50.
The NWS reminds drivers that freezing fog can be deceptive, with clear stretches suddenly giving way to dense patches of low visibility. Use caution on rural highways and in river valleys where moisture tends to pool overnight.
