Des Moines, Iowa – Drivers across central and west-central Iowa are waking up to dense fog Sunday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions with visibility dropping to a quarter mile or less in some areas. The Iowa DOT reported heavy fog along stretches of Interstate 80 near Adair just before sunrise, forcing slower travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the fog developed overnight and is expected to improve quickly as a cold front pushes through later this morning, bringing drier air. Until then, commuters in Des Moines, Ames, and surrounding rural counties should expect delays and exercise caution.
Transportation officials urge drivers to reduce speed, keep headlights on low beam, and allow extra distance between vehicles. The most significant impacts are being felt along I-35 and I-80 corridors, where traffic volume is heaviest during the morning drive.
The fog should lift by mid-morning as winds increase, clearing roadways for the remainder of the day. Additional advisories are not anticipated once the cold front moves through.
