Des Moines, Iowa – Cold temperatures continue to affect the Des Moines area as subfreezing mornings persist across central Iowa, according to the National Weather Service.
Early Tuesday conditions at Des Moines International Airport showed temperatures near 11°F, with wind chills around 5°F under mostly clear skies. Light west winds are contributing to the cold feel, particularly during early morning and overnight hours.
The National Weather Service reports that temperatures will gradually moderate through the day, with highs reaching near 37°F Tuesday afternoon as clouds decrease and winds remain light. Despite the daytime warming, overnight lows will remain below freezing, dropping to around 29°F Tuesday night.
Conditions continue to improve midweek. Wednesday is expected to be partly sunny, with highs climbing to around 39°F, marking the warmest day of the week so far. Winds will remain light, limiting additional wind chill concerns during daytime hours. Overnight lows Wednesday night will fall back to near 15°F, reinforcing continued cold exposure risks overnight.
On New Year’s Day, mostly sunny skies are forecast with highs near 28°F, followed by mostly cloudy conditions Thursday and Friday. Highs later this week are expected to remain in the low 30s, with overnight lows generally in the low 20s.
No snow, ice, or freezing precipitation is currently expected during this forecast period, and no winter weather advisories or warnings are in effect. The National Weather Service notes that visibility and travel conditions should remain favorable.
Commuters, students, and early-shift workers should dress appropriately for cold mornings and allow extra time for vehicles to warm up. Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring forecasts as temperatures fluctuate through the end of the week.
