Des Moines, IA – A powerful winter storm is set to impact Iowa on Wednesday, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. CDT Wednesday for Boone, Hardin, Butler, Cass, and Guthrie counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, snowfall rates could reach two inches per hour, with a total accumulation of 1 to 3 inches. Thundersnow may also develop, reducing visibility. Wind gusts up to 60 mph could create whiteout conditions and cause tree damage.
Travel is expected to be difficult to impossible at times, especially during the morning and evening commutes. The combination of snow and strong winds may lead to brief periods of near-zero visibility.
Drivers should use caution, slow down, and check the Iowa 511 app or www.511ia.org for real-time road conditions. Power outages and wind damage are also possible.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, prepare for possible disruptions, and avoid unnecessary travel.
