Denver, Colorado – A round of strong thunderstorms could slam northeast Colorado this afternoon, bringing hail up to an inch and the threat of brief tornado spin-ups as a cold front sweeps through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, the most active storm window begins around 1 p.m. and continues into the evening across areas below 9,000 feet, including Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, and Greeley. Storms will move from northwest to southeast, with localized downpours, wind gusts, and potential hail damage. Fog will dissipate by late morning, giving way to increasing instability.

Jefferson, Douglas, and Larimer counties could see short bursts of heavy rain impacting afternoon travel on I-25 and US 36. Motorists are advised to slow down on slick roads and watch for reduced visibility. While the tornado risk remains low, the NWS warns that a quick spin-up can’t be ruled out.

Spotter activation may be needed this afternoon, and emergency officials urge residents to secure outdoor items and stay weather-aware. Storms may redevelop through the weekend with highs nearing 86°F by Sunday.

Additional watches or warnings could be issued later today.
