DENVER, Colo.Colorado’s first major snow event of the season is on the way, and it’s expected to make for a hazardous Wednesday morning commute across the Denver metro and I-25 corridor. The National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder warns that snow will develop shortly after midnight, increasing in intensity before sunrise.

By dawn Wednesday, commuters should expect snow-covered and slick roads from Fort Collins to Castle Rock, with reduced visibility and slow travel on I-25, U.S. 36, and C-470. Total accumulations in the Denver area are forecast between 2 and 6 inches, with the heaviest bands setting up along the Palmer Divide and foothills of Boulder, Jefferson, and Douglas Counties.

Meteorologists say localized totals up to 8 inches are possible in foothill communities including Genesee, Ken Caryl, and Conifer, where snow will persist later into the day. East of Denver, lighter amounts are expected, with 1 to 3 inches possible near Fort Collins and Greeley.

While snow will gradually taper from north to south Wednesday afternoon, lingering icy spots and slush refreeze could keep roadways treacherous through the evening commute. Wind chills will dip into the teens and low 20s, adding to the winter punch.
