Dover, DE – A blustery and colder Thanksgiving weekend is ahead for the Delmarva Peninsula as a strong coastal storm tracks offshore, bringing periods of cold rain, gusty winds, and a possible frost or light freeze by early next week. The shift will make for unsettled conditions across Delaware, Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and coastal Virginia through Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Mount Holly, NJ, and Wakefield, VA, a developing low along the mid-Atlantic coast will draw chilly Atlantic moisture inland Friday night into Saturday. Widespread rain and wind gusts up to 40 mph are expected along the coast, with localized flooding possible in low-lying areas and poor drainage zones. Temperatures will tumble behind the system, with highs only in the 40s Sunday and widespread lows in the upper 20s to mid-30s by Monday morning.

According to the Maryland Department of Transportation, wet and windy conditions could cause delays on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and portions of U.S. 50 and Route 13, especially for high-profile vehicles. Coastal flooding and rough surf may affect Ocean City and Chincoteague, while inland areas face frost and icy spots after the rain clears.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, protect plants and pipes, and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Travelers returning from the Thanksgiving holiday should check local advisories for wind and tide updates.
