DOVER, Delaware – With Thanksgiving travel approaching and colder weather not far behind, Delaware officials are reminding drivers to get vehicles ready now for safe winter driving. From Wilmington to Dover, motorists are encouraged to complete maintenance checks and pack essential supplies before the first winter storms arrive later this month.
According to the Delaware Department of Transportation, early November is the ideal time to check tire tread, battery health, and fluid levels, and to replace windshield wipers if needed. Officials advise every motorist to carry a winter emergency kit with blankets, jumper cables, a flashlight, bottled water, nonperishable food, and traction material such as sand or kitty litter.
Drivers using I-95, Route 1, or U.S. 13 during the Thanksgiving rush should also plan for heavy traffic and potential weather changes between the northern metro areas and the coast. “A few simple steps now can prevent major problems once cold and snow arrive,” a DelDOT spokesperson said. Motorists are encouraged to keep at least a half tank of gas, pack warm clothing, and ensure cell phones are fully charged before long drives.
DelDOT recommends using Delaware 511 for real-time traffic and plow updates throughout the winter season. Officials stress that early preparation will help reduce roadside emergencies and keep families moving safely during the Thanksgiving travel period and the months ahead.
