BOSTON, Massachusetts – As Thanksgiving travel draws near, Massachusetts officials are encouraging drivers to prepare vehicles now for the long winter season ahead. From Boston to Worcester, motorists are being urged to complete maintenance checks and assemble emergency supplies before cold weather and early snow return later this month.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation says early November is the ideal time for preventive care. Drivers should inspect tires, top off antifreeze, replace wipers, and test batteries to avoid breakdowns during busy travel days. Each vehicle should also carry a winter emergency kit — including blankets, a flashlight, jumper cables, snacks, and traction material such as sand or kitty litter.

Travelers heading west on the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) or north along I-95 are advised to keep gas tanks at least half full and to plan for limited services in rural areas. “Taking a few minutes now to prepare can make a major difference once winter driving begins,” a MassDOT spokesperson said. Officials also recommend dressing warmly, packing extra water, and charging phones before long drives.

The state encourages motorists to use Mass511 for up-to-date road and plow information once storms begin later in the season. With heavier travel expected across New England by Thanksgiving week, early preparation will help ensure safe, reliable trips for families hitting the road across Massachusetts.
