Binghamton, NY – Drivers across parts of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania could face near-whiteout conditions before daybreak Monday as heavy snow and 45 mph wind gusts slam roads ahead of the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday for Delaware County in New York and for Northern Wayne, Wyoming, Lackawanna and Luzerne counties in Pennsylvania. An additional 3 to 7 inches of snow is expected in most areas, with up to 9 inches possible in far eastern Delaware County and as much as 10 inches in the higher elevations of eastern Luzerne and Lackawanna counties. Winds will gust as high as 45 mph, blowing and drifting snow across open roads.

Travel on I-81 near Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, along Route 6 in Wayne County, and on rural roads near Walton and Delhi could become treacherous overnight. Bridges and overpasses will ice over first, and visibility may drop below a quarter mile at times.

PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission urge drivers to delay unnecessary travel and check 511PA for real-time conditions. In New York, motorists can call 511 for the latest updates.

Anyone who must travel should carry food, water and a flashlight, and allow extra time to reach their destination. Winds will remain strong through Monday evening, and additional advisories could follow if blowing snow continues to reduce visibility.
