Lafayette, IN — A man driving a hearse led Indiana State Police on a pursuit through Lafayette and into West Lafayette just after 10 p.m. Friday night.
According to Indiana State Police, Trooper Miramontes observed the hearse in Tippecanoe County traveling north in the southbound lanes of Sagamore Parkway near Kossuth Street with red and white lights flashing. The driver ignored a red light at South Street before crossing into the correct lanes. When the trooper attempted a traffic stop, the hearse continued northbound.
The pursuit spanned from Lafayette into West Lafayette, where the suspect turned onto Sachem Boulevard. The vehicle finally stopped at Sachem Boulevard and Sachem Court, but the driver reportedly ignored commands before being taken into custody without further incident.
Authorities identified the driver as Herman Gray, 39, of Terre Haute. He was transported to the Tippecanoe County Jail and is facing preliminary charges, including resisting law enforcement with a vehicle (Level 6 felony), resisting law enforcement (Class A misdemeanor), and improper use of a driver’s license (Class C misdemeanor).
Trooper Miramontes was assisted by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office and West Lafayette Police.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
