Dayton, Ohio – A bitterly cold start to the new year is settling across southwest Ohio, with temperatures struggling to climb out of the 20s on New Year’s Day and an even colder night ahead.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, daytime highs Thursday will range from the mid to upper 20s across much of the Miami Valley, with a few southern locations briefly touching the low 30s. Northern communities remain colder, keeping the entire region locked in below-freezing conditions throughout the day.

As skies clear tonight, temperatures are expected to fall sharply. Overnight lows dip into the teens for most of southwest Ohio, with some rural areas briefly reaching the lower teens by early Friday morning. The cold air marks a sharp contrast from the milder conditions seen late last week and may catch some residents off guard as they return to work and travel following holiday celebrations.

Road conditions are expected to remain generally dry, but transportation officials caution that untreated surfaces, bridges, and overpasses could become slick overnight as temperatures fall. Drivers are urged to slow down during the early morning commute and allow extra stopping distance.

The cold weather also increases the risk for exposed pipes and strain on home heating systems. Residents are encouraged to protect outdoor plumbing, check space heaters for safe operation, and ensure pets have adequate shelter from the cold.

While no precipitation is expected, the cold pattern lingers into the weekend. Highs remain below normal Friday and Saturday, with gradual moderation possible by late weekend or early next week.

Forecasters say additional updates will be issued if colder air expands or if new advisories become necessary, but for now, the main message is clear: New Year’s Day brings a cold, wintry reminder that January has arrived.
