Davenport, Iowa – Clusters of thunderstorms moving across eastern Iowa early Friday could bring lightning, hail, and heavy rain.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, storms are tracking northeast across eastern Iowa and northeast Missouri, with activity expected to reach parts of the region through around 4 a.m. Friday.

Forecasters say the stronger storm cells may produce frequent lightning, small hail, and gusty winds as they move through communities in the early morning hours.

Locally heavy rainfall is also possible, which could briefly reduce visibility for drivers and create ponding water on roadways.

Cities including Davenport, Iowa City, and Burlington may see thunderstorms move through as the line of storms advances northeast.

Travelers along major highways such as Interstate 80, Interstate 74, and U.S. Highway 34 could encounter brief heavy downpours and lightning, particularly during early morning travel hours.

Meteorologists note that storms are moving toward the northeast at around 45 mph, meaning weather conditions may change quickly as the system passes through.

While widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated stronger cells may still produce small hail and gusty winds before the storms move out of the region.

Drivers are encouraged to slow down during heavy rain and watch for reduced visibility or water collecting on roads.

Residents should also move indoors if thunderstorms approach, as frequent lightning can occur even with weaker storms.

Early commuters, delivery drivers, and morning travelers across eastern Iowa and western Illinois may encounter wet roads and lightning until storms pass later in the morning.
