Hastings, NE – Residents across central Nebraska should prepare for dangerously cold conditions as an Arctic front arrives Friday night, bringing sub-zero temperatures and severe wind chills. The National Weather Service warns that wind chills could reach as low as -25°, creating hazardous conditions throughout the weekend and into early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, mild conditions on Thursday, with a high near 46°F, will rapidly deteriorate Friday as strong winds and a passing cold front push temperatures into the teens by evening. Overnight lows Saturday and Sunday are forecast to drop below zero, with wind chills making it feel even colder.

The bitter cold will persist into Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, with daytime highs only reaching the mid-teens. Breezy north winds will exacerbate the chill, prompting safety warnings for frostbite and hypothermia risks.

Drivers should exercise caution on area roadways, including US Route 6 and nearby rural highways, as patchy fog and freezing conditions are expected before temperatures plummet. Residents are urged to check heating systems, bring pets indoors, and avoid prolonged exposure to the cold.

The extended forecast indicates that temperatures will remain well below average through Tuesday, with overnight lows near -4°F. Wind chill advisories are expected to remain in effect, particularly during early morning hours.
