Pittsburgh, PA — An extreme cold warning remains in effect for parts of Pennsylvania and West Virginia until 1 p.m. Wednesday, with dangerously low wind chills reaching as low as -28°F.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Pittsburgh, affected areas include the higher elevations of Westmoreland, Fayette, and Indiana counties in Pennsylvania, along with Eastern and Western Tucker and Eastern Preston counties in West Virginia. The extreme cold poses a significant risk of frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure and dress in layers, including hats, face masks, and gloves, to protect against the dangerous conditions. Additional precautions include wrapping or draining water pipes or allowing them to drip slowly to prevent freezing.

The NWS warns that prolonged exposure to these temperatures can lead to severe health risks. For those needing to venture outside, minimizing time outdoors and ensuring all skin is covered can mitigate the risks.

Temperatures are expected to remain dangerously low until midweek, with updates available on the NWS website and through local weather alerts.

Stay safe by preparing your home and planning limited outdoor activities until conditions improve.
