Chicago, IL – Dangerous heat and unhealthy air quality will combine to create hazardous conditions across northeastern Illinois today. With heat indices expected to soar to 110 degrees, residents are urged to limit outdoor activities and stay indoors, especially those with respiratory conditions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for all of northern Illinois, warning that extreme temperatures could lead to heat-related illnesses. In addition, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect until midnight due to elevated pollution levels. According to the NWS, the air quality is expected to be particularly harmful to sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Health officials recommend staying hydrated, wearing lightweight clothing, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours. Those without air conditioning are encouraged to seek out cooling centers or other public air-conditioned spaces. Keep a close eye on elderly neighbors and anyone who may be vulnerable to heat stress.

The heat wave is expected to break later in the week as cooler temperatures and scattered thunderstorms move into the region. Until then, residents should prioritize safety and stay updated on local weather alerts.
