Chicago, IL – A powerful Arctic air mass will sweep through Illinois starting Sunday, bringing dangerously cold temperatures and subzero wind chills. Residents should prepare for extreme cold and hazardous conditions lasting through much of next week.

According to the National Weather Service, wind chills could drop as low as -30°F early Monday and Tuesday. Snow and ice accumulation are also expected, increasing the risk of slippery roads and travel delays, especially along the I-55 corridor. The coldest air will arrive Monday, with highs struggling to reach double digits.

Sunday will bring snow showers and blustery conditions, with wind gusts up to 35 mph. Bitter cold will intensify overnight into Washington’s Birthday, with lows around 2°F. By midweek, the extreme cold will continue, with high temperatures staying below freezing and nighttime lows in the single digits.

Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and ensure pets are indoors. Drivers should carry emergency kits and check road conditions before traveling.
