Rock Island, IL – A winter storm will impact the Midwest this weekend, followed by an Arctic blast that will bring dangerously low wind chills into next week. Travelers on I-80 and surrounding highways should prepare for hazardous road conditions and freezing temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin Friday afternoon and continue through Saturday, with quick accumulations expected, especially north of I-80. Mixed precipitation, including freezing rain and sleet, is possible south of the interstate overnight Friday. Snow will taper off by Sunday, but colder air will move in, dropping wind chills as low as -30°F by Monday night.

Blowing snow and ice will make travel difficult, and drivers should check road conditions before heading out. Officials advise carrying an emergency kit with blankets, food, and extra clothing in case of delays. Those spending time outdoors should dress in layers and cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite.

The extreme cold is expected to last into midweek, with single-digit highs and subzero lows. Residents are urged to take precautions, check on vulnerable neighbors, and limit time outside.
