Grand Rapids, MI – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Rapids has issued a warning for dangerous waves and currents expected along the Lake Michigan shoreline today. Northern winds, which have caused significant upwelling, are expected to continue throughout the day, building waves between 3 and 7 feet by this afternoon and evening.
According to the NWS, the highest wave activity is anticipated south of Holland, Michigan, impacting popular beaches from South Haven to St. Joseph. Piers in these areas may be heavily swamped by waves late into the evening, making conditions hazardous for swimmers and beachgoers. The NWS advises against swimming, highlighting the significant risk posed by the dangerous currents and waves.
Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water and avoid walking on piers until conditions improve. The NWS also emphasizes that these waves could create strong rip currents, increasing the likelihood of drownings. This warning is part of a broader alert for high wave activity across Lake Michigan, particularly affecting areas south of Manistee.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to exercise caution, stay informed, and heed all safety warnings during this period of elevated risk.
