Texas – Severe weather is expected to strike northern and western areas of Central Texas today, bringing the potential for damaging winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Abilene and San Angelo has issued alerts for residents, particularly those near Interstate 20, to prepare for heavy rain that could cause flash flooding in low-lying areas. Officials emphasize the importance of staying indoors and avoiding travel on roads that may flood.

According to the NWS, storms will intensify this afternoon, continuing into the evening with rainfall expected to exceed two inches in some areas. Strong thunderstorms may bring winds up to 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters, posing serious risks to vehicles and property. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, particularly for areas in the “Slight Risk” zone, which covers a significant portion of the region north of I-20.

Residents are urged to take necessary precautions, including securing outdoor items, staying updated through local weather channels, and avoiding unnecessary travel. Those in flood-prone areas should remain vigilant, as localized flash flooding could make roads impassable. The NWS advises, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown,” a reminder of the dangers of driving through water-covered roads.

This severe weather threat is part of an unstable weather pattern expected to linger into early next week. Forecasts show continued rain and thunderstorms on Sunday and potentially into Monday, with cooler temperatures moving in by mid-week. The weekend’s rainfall may contribute to rising water levels in rivers and creeks, increasing the flood risk.

Residents should remain informed, as the forecast may change quickly, and further updates from local authorities will be essential for staying safe.
