Chicago, IL – Forecasters are warning of a winter storm system expected to move across northern Illinois Friday night into Saturday morning, bringing heavy snowfall rates near 1 inch per hour and hazardous travel conditions across the Chicago metro area, including Cook, Will, and DuPage Counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, snow is forecast to begin Friday evening, intensifying overnight with the heaviest snowfall late Friday into early Saturday. Temperatures in the upper 20s to low 30s°F and southeast wind gusts up to 25 mph will further reduce visibility and make roads slick and snow-covered through the early hours of Saturday morning.
Forecasters note that while everyone in the Chicago region will see snow at onset, areas south of the city could transition to a rain/snow mix later Saturday as temperatures rise slightly. Regardless, holiday travelers should prepare for slowed travel and potential delays across I-55, I-80, I-88, and I-90, as well as at Chicago O’Hare and Midway airports.
Residents are urged to monitor forecast updates, avoid unnecessary travel, and allow extra time if heading out Friday night or Saturday morning.
