Chicago, IL – A 33-year-old man has been charged with felony retail theft after allegedly attempting to leave a downtown Macy’s store with more than $1,200 in merchandise, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said officers with the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Community Safety Team responded around 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, to the Macy’s on State Street for a report of retail theft. Surveillance footage reportedly showed a man taking jewelry, multiple gift sets, a comforter, and a can of beer from a cooler before attempting to leave the store.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, store loss prevention personnel tried to stop the suspect, but he allegedly refused to comply. Responding officers said they had to take the man to the ground to place him under arrest.

The suspect, identified as a Chicago resident, was charged with one Class 3 felony count of retail theft and one misdemeanor count of resisting a peace officer. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charges later that day.

He was released from custody on Jan. 5 following his court appearance at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse. Officials reminded the public that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
