Hartford, Connecticut – Roads across northern Connecticut could turn impassable by late Sunday afternoon as heavy snow and 55 mph wind gusts sweep into the region by 4 p.m., threatening the Monday morning commute and increasing the risk of stranded drivers overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Blizzard Warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Tuesday for Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties. Forecasters expect 12 to 20 inches of snow, with strong winds capable of producing near-whiteout conditions and significant drifting.

In Hartford and Windsor Locks, snowfall rates could top 1 to 2 inches per hour Sunday night, quickly covering I-84 and I-91. In Tolland County, including Vernon and Union, open stretches of roadway may see blowing snow reduce visibility below a quarter mile at times. Windham County cities such as Willimantic and Putnam face similar impacts, along with the potential for tree damage and scattered power outages as gusts peak late Sunday into Monday.

Officials urge residents to avoid non-emergency travel. Charge electronic devices, secure outdoor items and keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle. If you become stranded, remain inside your car and call for assistance.

Conditions may gradually improve after daybreak Tuesday, but additional advisories could follow as cleanup efforts begin statewide.
