CLEVELAND, Ohio – Dangerous swimming and boating conditions are expected on Lake Erie through Thursday night, with waves reaching 3 to 6 feet along Ohio’s northern shoreline. The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazard Statement and Small Craft Advisory for the entire stretch from Toledo to Conneaut.
According to the NWS Cleveland office, strong winds will continue to push high surf into popular beaches, including Kelleys Island, Edgewater Park, Euclid Beach, Fairport Harbor, and Presque Isle. Officials urge residents to avoid piers, breakwalls, and river outlets, where currents can quickly overwhelm swimmers.
The surf will make conditions especially hazardous for small craft. Inexperienced mariners and those in smaller vessels are urged to remain in port until calmer waters return. Beachgoers are advised to obey posted closures and stay out of the water until the advisory expires.
Travel along shoreline roads may also be impacted by wave spray and gusty winds. Safety officials recommend avoiding unnecessary trips near the lake until conditions improve.
Warnings remain in effect until late Thursday night, with updates expected as winds shift into the weekend.
