Columbia, IL – A heavy police presence remains in a Columbia neighborhood Wednesday after a man allegedly barricaded himself inside a home following an overnight incident involving a reported stolen firearm.
According to the Monroe County Sheriffโs Department, deputies were called to the 1800 block of Meadow Court at about 12:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a firearm theft. When officers arrived, they said the suspect refused to comply with commands, barricaded himself in the basement, and allegedly made threats toward law enforcement.
Multiple agencies, including the Columbia Police Department, Waterloo Police Department, Illinois State Police, and Columbia EMS, are assisting deputies at the scene. Authorities said negotiations with the suspect are ongoing.
The Sheriffโs Department is urging residents to avoid Meadow Court and surrounding areas until further notice, citing the large police presence and ongoing tactical response. Officials added that while there is no immediate threat to the broader community, the area has been secured as a precaution.
Authorities did not release details about the suspectโs identity, whether anyone else is inside the residence, or how long the standoff may continue. Updates are expected as the situation develops.
