Leadville, CO – Heavy snow and powerful wind gusts are set to challenge travelers across Colorado’s central mountain regions through early Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. MDT Wednesday, April 2, for elevations above 11,000 feet in the Eastern Sawatch Mountains, Western Mosquito Range, and East Lake County, including the areas of Climax and Bonanza. Forecasters expect an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow, with wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph.

Lower elevations are also impacted. The advisory continues until 9 p.m. MDT Tuesday for the Leadville vicinity, Western Chaffee County, and the Eastern San Juan Mountains, including Wolf Creek Pass and Cumbres Pass. These areas could see up to 3 inches of snow and similar wind conditions.

Travelers should expect slick roads, poor visibility, and snowpacked mountain passes. Widespread blowing snow may create whiteout conditions, particularly at higher elevations.

Motorists are urged to slow down, keep headlights on, and check road conditions via 511 before traveling. High-profile vehicles should use extra caution due to strong crosswinds.

This weather system marks a typical spring challenge in Colorado’s high country, where late-season storms can bring winter-like travel risks well into April.
