Cold air grips the Pikes Peak region this morning, and frost coats parked cars across Colorado Springs. Temperatures sit near 31 degrees at the municipal airport with light southeast winds and clear skies.
But conditions will change quickly.
Sunshine dominates today, and highs climb to 65 degrees by afternoon. Northwest winds increase to 15 to 25 mph, with gusts near 40 mph. Relative humidity drops as low as 9 percent. A Red Flag Warning remains in effect late this morning through early evening for critical fire weather conditions along and east of I-25.
Any spark could spread rapidly. Avoid outdoor burning and secure loose items. Fire crews remain on alert across El Paso and Pueblo counties.
Tonight turns mostly clear with lows near 32 degrees. Friday stays sunny and warmer, reaching 68 degrees. However, a Fire Weather Watch continues for Friday as gusty winds and low humidity redevelop.
Saturday brings increasing clouds with highs near 67. Sunday trends cooler with highs around 63 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. By Sunday night, a slight chance of rain and snow showers develops. While no heavy snow is expected in the city, higher elevations could see light accumulation. If moisture falls and temperatures dip near freezing, slick spots may develop before sunrise Monday.
Early next week cools further. Monday holds near 56 degrees with scattered showers possible. Tuesday and Wednesday keep small rain chances with highs in the upper 50s.
Long-range guidance suggests temperatures moderate again into early March, with milder air returning by midweek.
