Pueblo, Colo. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to erupt across central and southern Colorado this afternoon, bringing the threat of gusty winds over 60 mph, small hail, and heavy rainfall from the mountains to the eastern plains.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, storms will begin forming in the high terrain by early afternoon Sunday, then push east into cities like Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and La Junta by late evening. The strongest activity is expected between 4 p.m. and midnight, with severe cells capable of producing lightning, damaging outflow winds, and brief downpours.

Travelers along I-25 and Highway 50 should stay alert for slick roads and fast-moving storms, particularly near Canon City and Trinidad. A few snow showers could even dust peaks above 12,000 feet in the San Juans by Monday morning.

The threat of daily thunderstorms continues through Saturday, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Monday may bring stronger storms across the eastern plains, with winds near 65 mph.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, monitor NOAA weather alerts, and report severe conditions to local spotters.
