Grand Junction, Colorado – Travel conditions are beginning to deteriorate across western Colorado today as a mix of rain, snow, and thunderstorms spreads across the region, especially impacting higher elevations through the evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, snow showers are developing above 9,000 feet, primarily along the central and southern Continental Divide. Lower elevations, including Grand Junction, Montrose, and Delta, will see scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms developing through the afternoon.
Mountain corridors including I-70 near Vail Pass, US-50 over Monarch Pass, and CO-65 on the Grand Mesa could become slick as bursts of snow reduce visibility and coat road surfaces. Temperatures are running 5 to 10 degrees below normal, increasing the likelihood of accumulating snow in higher terrain.
Drivers crossing mountain passes should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, including brief whiteout visibility and wet, slushy pavement. Carry traction gear where required and allow extra travel time. Outdoor plans in higher elevations should be adjusted due to lightning risk and colder conditions.
Showers taper late Sunday night, but additional unsettled weather may return early this week. Updates will be issued if travel impacts worsen or advisories are expanded.
