Pueblo, CO – Warm, windy conditions across southern Colorado are prompting elevated fire danger Monday, with critical alerts issued for the San Luis Valley and areas along the southern I-25 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, Red Flag Warnings are in effect through Monday evening, March 31, as southwest winds are expected to gust between 20 to 30 mph. Combined with low humidity and dry vegetation, these conditions create an ideal environment for rapid fire spread.

The warning primarily affects Alamosa, Walsenburg, La Veta, and parts of Pueblo County, where temperatures are forecast to reach into the upper 60s and low 70s. Wind gusts will be strongest during the afternoon, when fire risk peaks. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and secure anything that could spark fires, such as chains on trailers or open flames.

Meanwhile, snow showers may begin developing Monday afternoon in the central mountains, with heavier snowfall expected to increase overnight. Travel through high-elevation passes may become hazardous late Monday into Tuesday.

Officials advise monitoring local alerts, avoiding outdoor fire activity, and having evacuation plans ready in fire-prone areas. Updates are available via the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies.
