Denver, CO – A dangerous Arctic cold front is bringing extreme temperatures to Colorado through Tuesday, with lows plunging below zero across the state. Gunnison is expected to face some of the coldest conditions, dropping to -30°F by Monday night.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Junction, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for the Gunnison Valley Sunday night, while Extreme Cold Watches cover higher elevations statewide into Monday. Residents in areas such as Steamboat Springs, Hayden, and Aspen are also advised to prepare for sub-zero temperatures. Grand Junction, though slightly milder, will see lows near 9°F Monday night into Tuesday.
These dangerously cold conditions pose significant risks to health and safety. The NWS urges residents to limit outdoor exposure, ensure proper heating in homes, and bring pets indoors. Motorists traveling along I-70 and Highway 50 should expect icy conditions and possible travel delays, particularly during overnight hours when temperatures are lowest.
Looking ahead, temperatures are forecast to remain cold but gradually improve by midweek. By Wednesday, daytime highs in Grand Junction will reach the upper 30s, with lows climbing into the teens. Gunnison and other high-elevation areas, however, may experience longer-lasting cold.
Colorado residents are reminded to check for updates from local authorities, stay indoors if possible, and use caution when traveling during this extreme weather event.
