Alamosa, CO – A high wind warning is in effect for southern Colorado, where gusts up to 60 mph are expected to sweep through Alamosa, Trinidad, and surrounding areas Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the warning covers the Central and Southern San Luis Valley, Walsenburg vicinity, and Western Las Animas County. The alert began at 10 a.m. MDT and will remain active until 5 p.m. Thursday, with sustained southwest winds between 30 and 40 mph.

Officials warn that the strong winds may knock down trees and power lines, potentially causing outages across the region. Motorists, especially those driving high-profile vehicles along north-south routes like U.S. Highway 160 and Interstate 25, should expect difficult driving conditions.

Cities including Monte Vista, Antonito, Manassa, Fort Garland, and San Luis are all within the warning zone. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain alert for downed wires or falling debris.

These conditions are stronger than typical April wind events in the region, which historically range between 15–25 mph. The National Weather Service encourages anyone in the affected zones to monitor updates at weather.gov/pub and use caution throughout the day.
