Santa Rosa, NM – Winds up to 65 mph are expected to sweep through eastern New Mexico today, prompting a high wind warning that covers multiple counties and threatens power disruptions, hazardous travel, and limited visibility.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, the warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday for Quay, Union, and Guadalupe counties, as well as neighboring areas across central and northern New Mexico. Southwest winds ranging from 30 to 40 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 60 to 65 mph, are forecasted.
Officials warn that damaging winds may topple trees and power lines, with widespread power outages likely across the affected regions. Blowing dust could reduce visibility to under four miles, especially in rural and open areas, further complicating road travel.
Drivers of high-profile vehicles are urged to use caution along Interstate 40 and regional routes where wind exposure is highest.
Residents should secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind hours. The strongest winds are expected during the early to mid-afternoon hours.
This type of wind activity is not uncommon in New Mexico during spring months but remains dangerous due to its potential for rapid change and regional disruption.
