Pueblo, Colo. – High mountain roads across central and southern Colorado could become dangerous today and into Wednesday as heavy snow blankets elevations above 9,000 feet, with totals reaching up to 12 inches in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect across the Eastern Sawatch Mountains, Western Mosquito Range, and parts of Fremont, Lake, and Mineral counties. A more severe Winter Storm Warning is in place for elevations above 11,000 feet in the Eastern Sawatch Mountains, including the Bonanza area, through 6 p.m. Tuesday. Snowfall across these regions is expected to range from 5 to 10 inches, with localized amounts higher, and winds gusting to 35 mph.

Mountain passes such as Wolf Creek, Cumbres, and North Pass are likely to become snow-packed and slick, especially through Tuesday night. Travel may be extremely difficult, particularly along U.S. Highway 50 and other alpine routes. Authorities urge drivers to delay non-essential travel, carry emergency kits, and check conditions by calling 511.

This late-season storm is part of a broader pattern impacting Colorado’s high terrain, typical of May transitions but still hazardous. Winter weather alerts remain active through noon Wednesday, and further updates are expected as the storm evolves.
