Chama, N.M. – Heavy snow is hammering the Tusas Mountains near Chama this Tuesday, with accumulations of up to 6 inches expected by nightfall, creating dangerous travel conditions and the potential for power outages.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. MDT. Snow will continue to fall through the day, with the heaviest accumulation expected across mountain peaks. Officials warn that travel may become “very difficult to impossible” and some roads could be closed.

Drivers on U.S. Route 64 and surrounding high-elevation passes should expect delays and slippery conditions. The added weight of wet snow on already leafed-out trees increases the chance of downed branches and power lines in the area. Residents are urged to charge phones and avoid non-essential travel.

This late-season snow is uncommon but not unprecedented for the Tusas range. Chama-area residents should monitor for updates and check nmroads.com or dial 511 for live road conditions.

The advisory may be extended if snowfall persists into the evening or additional bands move in.
