Grand Junction, Colorado – Strong westerly winds and bone-dry air are driving dangerous fire weather across western Colorado, raising the risk of fast-moving wildfires in Grand Junction, Delta, Paonia, and surrounding areas through Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Red Flag Warning is in effect this afternoon for the lower Colorado River valley and North Fork regions, including key stretches from the Grand Valley to New Castle and from Delta to Montrose. Wind gusts between 25–35 mph and relative humidity dipping to just 10–15% are fueling these critical fire conditions.

Officials urge residents in Mesa, Delta, and Montrose counties to avoid all outdoor burning and to double-check that campfires are fully extinguished. Gusty winds could quickly turn small sparks into major blazes, especially near highways, grasslands, and rural neighborhoods.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items and prepare for possible road visibility issues due to blowing dust. Stay alert for emergency notifications, and keep mobile devices charged in case of rapid evacuation orders.

Elevated fire risk will persist through the weekend, with additional advisories possible as windy, dry conditions continue across western Colorado.
