Grand Junction, CO – Showers, thunderstorms, and even light mountain snow are returning to western Colorado today and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.
Forecasters say the highest terrain, particularly elevations above 9,000 feet, is most likely to experience precipitation. Light snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is possible in these mountain areas as colder air mixes with storm activity.
According to the weather service, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected both Friday and Saturday. Residents are urged to take precautions, as lightning risks increase with each storm cell. Officials remind the public, “When thunder roars, go indoors.”
By Sunday, precipitation chances should decrease as drier air begins to move in. However, temperatures are expected to stay well below seasonal averages across the region. That means cooler, damp conditions for both mountain communities and nearby valleys into the weekend.
Travelers heading into higher terrain should be prepared for slick conditions, especially overnight when temperatures dip further. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time if crossing mountain passes where light snow accumulation could make travel hazardous.
The National Weather Service says the early October system highlights the seasonal transition now underway in Colorado. With cooler air lingering, the area could continue to see mixed rain and snow events as fall progresses.
