Denver, Colorado – Life-threatening cold is spreading across eastern and northeastern Colorado, where dangerously low wind chills will make frostbite a real concern for anyone spending extended time outdoors starting early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Denver, Pueblo, and Goodland, Cold Weather Advisories are in effect for much of the eastern plains from Friday morning through the weekend. Wind chills are expected to drop as low as 15 to 20 below zero, cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

The cold will be most pronounced across northeast and east-central Colorado, including communities such as Fort Morgan, Sterling, Akron, Julesburg, Limon, Burlington, and Lamar. Rural areas and open stretches of highway will be especially vulnerable due to persistent winds and limited shelter, increasing the risk for travelers and outdoor workers.

Officials warn that even short periods outdoors without proper winter protection can become dangerous, particularly during overnight and early morning hours. Livestock and pets are also at risk, and frozen pipes and vehicle battery failures are possible as the cold lingers.

Residents are urged to dress in multiple layers, cover exposed skin, limit unnecessary outdoor activity, and check on elderly neighbors and those without reliable heat. Cold Weather Advisories remain in effect through at least Sunday morning, and additional extensions are possible if Arctic air remains entrenched.
